How to Sell T-Shirts Online Using Teespring: 5 Tips for Newbies

Selling T-shirts online through Teespring is a great way to earn passive income or gain more attention for your brand or idea. However, being successful at T-shirt sales via Teespring isn't as simple as slapping together a design, adding it to the site and then watching the sales roll in. Spending a bit of time being more deliberate in your approach will increase your chances of success and boost your sales. Here are five tips to get you started.

Identify Your Audience

The most successful T-shirt campaigns have a very specific target audience in mind. This may seem counter-intuitive at first since many beginning e-commerce sellers falsely believe that the bigger their intended audience, the more they will sell. In reality though, the more general your audience, the greater the odds of your T-shirt getting totally lost in the shuffle of all the other T-shirts targeting the same large group of people.

One of the valuable services TeeSpy offers is the ability to use our comprehensive data to brainstorm and research your ideal audience. TeeSpring University also has some great tips for narrowing your audience down.

Create a Killer Design

This is not the time to skimp on design. Your T-shirt will be competing against many very professional designs, so the last thing you want is to try and sell a T-shirt that looks like it was haphazardly thrown together by someone who has no knowledge of basic graphic design principles.

The colors, font, spacing, and overall look of your T-shirt are just as important as your catchy saying or tagline. If this is not your area of expertise, it's absolutely worthwhile to pay a professional graphic designer to make your vision a reality.

Remember that whatever you pay your graphic designer can be considered a business expense at tax time as long as your T-shirt sales are profitable.

Research the Competition

While your idea may be unique, there are probably still other e-commerce sellers targeting the same audience. TeeSpy allows you to see all the useful stats on your competition:

  • Which campaigns in your niche have been the most successful?
  • How are your competitors promoting their T-shirts?

TeeSpy even allows you to see live Facebook ads from your competition, and how effective they are at engaging new customers. This allows you to learn from your competition and avoid their mistakes.

Price Appropriately

You want to price your T-shirt at a price point that will make you money but not so high that you will turn off buyers. It's crucial to perform market research to find out what similar T-shirts are selling for. You also need to have a clear handle on your business expenses and costs, and account for these when setting your price. With Teespring, the more T-shirts you sell, the higher your profits and the larger the percentage you get to keep per T-shirt, so keep this in mind when setting your pricepoint.

Market, Market, Market

TeeSpring has built-in marketing features, including a limited amount of Facebook advertising. Most successful sellers also spring for their own paid ads, however, especially through Facebook. If you already have a built-in audience via a popular blog or email newsletter, and this audience overlaps with your targeted T-shirt audience, then your marketing will be much more effective. Simply use your existing database to promote your T-shirt, and include an ad or two on your website or blog.

As you can see, selling T-shirts on Teespring isn't rocket science but it does require planning and strategy. By following our tips, you will greatly increase your chances of a successful and profitable T-shirt campaign.

  1. I like your advice about being specific when trying to find your target audience. It’s more likely that somebody specifically looking for motorcycle t-shirts will find them if the website has those words in their title rather than just “t-shirt”. I have been thinking about selling some shirts online so this really helps!
